Living Peace: Eugene Callender, June 2

On Monday, June 2, 2008, in Columbia University's John Jay Lounge, the
Reverend Eugene Callender will inaugurate the LIVING PEACE workshop series with a session addressing the search for inner peace in the Protestant Christian tradition. Columbia Professor Robert Pollack will introduce the session.
The Reverend Eugene Callender is the New York Life Leader-in-Residence at the Colin Powell Center for Policy Studies at City College. A respected community activist and in Harlem for 50 years, Dr. Callender was previously preaching minister at the Christian Parish for Spiritual Renewal in Harlem.
Dr. Callender serves as chairman of the board of the National Black Theater of Harlem and senior advisor to the Global Board of Directors of the Hunger Project. He serves on the Federal Council on Aging as appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives and is a member of the Democratic National Committee. He was appointed commissioner of the New York State Division of Parole by Governor Cuomo and as director of New York's Cities in Schools program by President Jimmy Carter. He was appointed to several presidential task forces by Presidents Johnson and Nixon concerning manpower, urban unemployment, and income policy.
Dr. Callender has practiced Siddha Yoga meditation since 1979 and has spoken internationally on how meditation can be a positive and powerful force in one's life.
Robert Pollack has been Professor of Biological Sciences at Columbia University since 1978 and director of the Center for the Study of Science and Religion since 1999. He is a lecturer at the Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (since 1998), an adjunct Professor for Science and Religion at Union Theological Seminary (since 2002), and at New York Theological Seminary (since 2008), and an adjunct professor of Religion (since 2002). Professor Pollack was dean of Columbia College from 1982 to 1989.
A collaboration between CTICE and the The Tibet Center in Brooklyn, "LIVING PEACE: Spiritual Approaches to Achieving Inner Peace" is a series of seminars and workshops where teachers and leaders of different faith backgrounds will present their respective techniques for realizing inner peace. LIVING PEACE seeks to offer the New York City community practical exposure to different ways of achieving and maintaining inner peace, and promoting awareness of the importance of this state.
The session will take place in the John Jay Lounge in John Jay Hall. LIVING PEACE is free and open to the public.
